What is PLAB?

PLAB (Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board) is an exam conducted by the General Medical Council (GMC) in the UK to assess whether international medical graduates have the necessary skills and knowledge to practice medicine in the UK.

Who Should Take PLAB?

International medical graduates (IMGs) who wish to register with the GMC and work as doctors in the UK must pass PLAB unless they have a recognized postgraduate qualification or are eligible for another registration route.

PLAB Structure

The PLAB exam consists of two parts:

  • PLAB 1: A written multiple-choice test of 180 questions over 3 hours.
  • PLAB 2: An Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) with 16 stations based on real patient scenarios.

PLAB 1 Overview

PLAB 1 tests your ability to apply medical knowledge to the care of patients. It is conducted in multiple countries, including India.

PLAB 2 Overview

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for PLAB 1, candidates must:

  • Hold a primary medical qualification accepted by the GMC
  • Have taken and passed the IELTS/OET English language test (IELTS: 7.5 overall, 7.0 in each component or OET: Grade B)

How to Register for PLAB

You must create an account on the GMC Online portal. Once eligibility is confirmed and IELTS/OET is submitted, you can book PLAB 1 at available centers.

Test Centers

PLAB 1 is conducted in major cities such as:

  • New Delhi
  • Chennai
  • Hyderabad
  • Bangladesh, Pakistan, UAE, Nigeria and others

PLAB 2 is conducted only at the GMC Clinical Assessment Centre in Manchester, UK.
