What is NEXT?

The National Exit Test (NEXT) is a forthcoming licensure examination for MBBS graduates in India. It aims to replace the FMGE and serve as a single exam for both final year MBBS qualification and medical licensure.

Who Should Take NEXT?

All MBBS graduates (Indian and foreign) who wish to practice medicine or apply for postgraduate medical courses in India will be required to appear for NEXT.

NEXT Exam Structure

NEXT is divided into two parts:

  • NEXT 1: Theory-based MCQ exam (replacing final year university exams)
  • NEXT 2: Practical/clinical assessment after internship
  • Qualifying NEXT 1 allows candidates to begin internship
  • Qualifying NEXT 2 grants medical licensure

NEXT Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for NEXT, candidates must:

  • Be a final year MBBS student or graduate from an NMC-recognized university
  • For FMGs, hold valid primary medical qualification and eligibility certificate from NMC

Passing Criteria

Students must secure qualifying marks in both NEXT 1 and NEXT 2. Only after passing both components will they be eligible for registration and PG admission.

Exam Mode

NEXT 1 will be a computer-based test with multiple-choice questions. NEXT 2 will be a practical clinical exam conducted by medical colleges and overseen by NMC.

Why is NEXT Important?

NEXT will serve three purposes:

  • Qualify MBBS students for graduation
  • License Indian & foreign graduates to practice in India
  • Rank candidates for PG admissions
